In the Trivandrum district of Kerala, lies Pangode, a cantonment area of the Indian Army, which houses a Hanuman Temple, renowned for its influx of devotees regularly.  It is described as the only temple in the world where the idol is a devotee. The main reason is that the Hanuman deity here is based on the concept of a Vishnu devotee. Another feature is that Lord Hanuman is on the right side and Lord Vishnu is on the left side. The idol of Lord Hanuman appears to be worshipping Lord Vishnu. Like the Pazhavangadi temple, the Madras Regiment of the Indian Army is looking after the temple affairs.

The State Forces of Travancore had their garrisons near the old Cantonment area in Thiruvananthapuram. When it was shifted to Pangode in 1935, the soldiers wanted a place of worship and the temple with Lord Hanuman, Lord Shiva, and Lord Vishnu was established at its current location.

The Hanuman idol is seated on a black marble platform with an umbrella installed on top of the deity for protection from harsh weather conditions. Earlier this year,  the Pangode Hanuman Temple undertook an interesting initiative on account of the consecration ceremony of the Ram Idol at the Ayodhya Temple. Coinciding with the consecration, the Pangode Hanuman temple painted its walls with six paintings, with each painting depicting a chapter from the Ramayana epic.  The first painting shows Lord Rama at King Janaka’s court, breaking the bow to win Sita’s hand in marriage. The second painting depicts Lord Rama, Lakshman and Sita living in exile in the forest. The third painting shows Lord Rama and his army of Vanars building the Ram Setu to cross over to Lanka. The fourth painting shows Lakshman injured in battle and Hanuman bringing in the Sanjeevni plant to save him. The last two paintings show Ravana’s slaying and then the coronation of Lord Ram after his exile, bringing in the Ram Rajya, considered the ideal form of governance.
