Perumbalam is an island village in Alappuzha district in the Indian state of Kerala. Nowadays, this place has become a popular tourist destination for its wonderful scenic beauty. Every evening, a beautiful sight can be seen at Perumbaram in Malappuram district in Kerala. A beautiful unchained elephant walks along the road here, which has become a major attraction for the people visiting here.
According to reports, the elephant was seen with a little man. He is said to be her owner, Muhammad Shimil. If one looks carefully, one can see that the elephant is holding a toy in its trunk. Locals say that this ride between the owner and the elephant is like two friends going out for a walk in the evening. They walk to the store to eat her favourite chocolate bars and pineapples.
Popularly known as Perumbaram Kaveri, the elephant is a beloved presence in the village and a much-loved star, both online and offline. The story of the heartwarming relationship between Kaveri and her owner, Muhammad Shimil, has left many intrigued and amazed by YouTube and Instagram. She is known on social media as ‘Ikante Ovena Kaveri’. It’s this popularity that prompted Shimil to hold a recent fan meeting. Gifts had arrived for her from different parts of Kerala.
In the media interaction, Shimil first met Kaveri five years ago in Adimali, a town in Kerala. At that time, she was very young. Seeing her, Shimil could not leave her like that. Everyone discouraged him, saying she would not survive and it would be a burden, but Shimil bought her and brought her home. After that, he gave her adequate treatment. Within a month, the elephant’s health improved. She began to eat, and she regained her health.
“At first, she was violent with him. However, I gave myself time to understand her. Her mood, emotions, and problems. To my surprise, she understood me quickly,” says Shimil.
Shimil also shared that Kaveri always wants her by his side. He said, “If I’m not around, she refuses to eat or drink water and throws tantrums. She is now invited to many ceremonies and rituals. I bought a caravan to accompany her.” But for the convenience of Kaveri, the journey is limited to 100 km. She has to stay in the truck for long trips, which Shimil worries will tire her out.
Shimil also has another male elephant named Parthasarathy, bought eight years ago. However, he also shared that even his family makes fun of him now, saying that he loves Kaveri more than his family. He added that Kaveri has truly become part of our family. “The only challenge is that I cannot take leave, as Kaveri does not allow me to leave for more than a day.”
