New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh government ordered a probe on Wednesday after Congress alleged that the name of Kasturba Gandhi was mentioned as Mahatma Gandhi's mother in sample question papers distributed in schools of the state.

Name of Kasturba – the wife of Mahatma Gandhi – was mentioned as the answer to the question "Who was Mahatama's mother" despite the name of Mahatma Gandhi's mother Putli Bai was one of the options in an objective question in the booklets, MP Congress spokesman Manak Agrawal claimed.

"The booklets, distributed among students and teachers as reference material for standard VIII test papers under the Rajiv Gandhi Shiksha Mission, rechristened as Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan by the BJP, mention Kasturba as Mahatma Gandhi's mother," PTI quoted Agrawal as saying in Bhopal.

Threatening to take the issue to the streets if the ruling BJP failed to tender an unconditional apology, Agrawal said, "The BJP is trying to create confusion about Mahatma Gandhi among students and the Congress will not allow it".

The material for the sample question papers was cleared by a five-member committee, he claimed adding action should be taken against officials responsible for the goof-up.

"We have utmost respect for Mahatma Gandhi," state School Education Minister Narottam Mishra said. A probe has been ordered into the matter, he added.

"I have also asked authorities to suspend the officials responsible for it," Mishra said.

The BJP MLA from Tikamgarh, Akhand Pratap Singh, has stopped distribution of the question papers in his district and written to Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh to seek an immediate correction.
