New Delhi: India started their campaign in the world hockey Olympic qualifying tournament at Santiago in Chile on a winning note thrashing Russia 8-0 early on Sunday.
Only the winner of the six-nation tournament would be eligible to take part in the Beijing Olympic Games.
The other teams in the qualifying event are Great Britain, Mexico, Austria and host Chile.
If India fail to qualify, it would be the first time that the eight-time Olympic Games gold medal winner would not take part in the quadrennial event.
