New York: Indian envoy Virendra Dayal, appointed to verify allegations against Natwar Singh and the Congress party made in the Volcker report is in New York to meet Paul Volcker.
The time of the meeting has not yet been decided though the agenda is clear.
Dayal will seek documents and other proof from the Volcker Committee on the basis of which Natwar Singh and the Congress party were named as non-contractual beneficiaries of Iraq?s Oil-for-Food programme.
A team of four officials is accompanying Dayal who is later scheduled to meet the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
The Volcker Committee, in its report, had also named 129 Indian companies, which were alleged to have paid bribes to the Saddam Hussein regime to get contracts for supply of humanitarian items.
Dayal is a former Under Secretary General of the United Nations and was chosen primarily for his familiarity with the way things work in the UN.
