New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Security has cleared the brief for the Defence Secretary talks on Siachen, which begin in Islamabad on Friday.

The political clearance for the Indian approach comes amidst reports that Pakistan is prepared to compromise. Reports suggest that Pakistan is for the first time willing to authenticate troop positions at Siachen.

Demarcation of troop positions is an Indian pre-condition for the phased demilitarisation of the world's highest battlefield. Indian troops are in a position of advantage on the glacier.

Reports from Islamababad indicate that Pakistan is willing to mark troop positions. It's condition is that India should not use this to make a legal claim on Siachen in future.
