India-Sri Lanka match called off
Just after 3.4 over, umpires Billy Bowden and Asoka de Silva decided to stop the play because of bad light.

New Delhi: Indian skipper Rahul Dravid won the toss and decided to bat in the first match of the three-match limited overs series. The decision is a little surprising, as the pitch will have a bit of moisture and give assistance to the pacers after the heavy rains.

Dravid came out to open the innings with Sachin Tendulkar, who has come back into the team after a long injury lay-off.

However, the weather was not in favour of the match as just after 3.4 over, umpires Billy Bowden and Asoka de Silva decided to stop the play because of bad light. India were 11 for no loss with Dravid on nine and Tendulkar batting on two.

Soon after the players entered the pavilion heavy showers lashed the ground and the match was called off. The match will now be played on Saturday, the reserve day.

Earlier the start of the match was delayed by 4-1/2 hours due to a wet outfield following heavy overnight showers.

The remaining two India- Sri Lanka games are scheduled for August 20 and 22 with a reserve day kept for continuation of each game in case of any interruption.

Of the 33 matches India have played against Sri Lanka in the Island country, they have managed to win just nine. It is a record that Team India will want to improve in Colombo over the next few days.
