BANGALORE: Owing to several proactive measures taken by the state government, including the launch of Madilu, Prasoothi Araiyke and Thayi Bhagya schemes, the infant and maternal mortality rates reduced across the state.According to official sources the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) which was 41 per 1000 in 2009 has been reduced to 38 per 1000 in 2011.On the other hand, the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR), which was 213 per 1 lakh in 2010 reduced to 178 per 1 lakh.The State Health and Family Welfare department sources told Express that due to the implementation of various programmes, the rate of both IMR and the MMR drastically dipped.While the IMR at the national level stood at 47 the MMR was at 212, the sources said.The scheme Thayi Bhagya, which has four components, including Janani Suraksha, Prasoothi Arogya Yojana and Chiranjeevi helped to increase institutional deliveries from 73 per cent in 2007-08 to 93.3 per cent in 2011-11.The state government also launched “Karnataka Comprehensive Nutrition Campaign” on a pilot basis in three taluks at a cost of `15 crore.The department has been provided `85.84 crores to tackle both IMR and the MMR during 2011-12.Sources said that in 2010-11 more than 2 lakh Madilu kits were distributed to pregnant women under BPL category and over 27945 women received free treatment under the Thayi Bhagya.While Janani Suraksha was aimed at safe delivery of pregnant women, the Prasoothi Arogya looked after improving the nutrition and antenatal check up.The Chiranjeevi scheme will provide financial assistance for complicated deliveries and ensure postnatal care in government and empanelled private hospitals.
