CHENNAI: An Iraqi engineer who arrived here for treatment for blood cancer on Saturday, was allegedly detained for nine hours at the airport.According to sources, Hassan Salman Khadir (42), an Iraqi engineer working with a firm in Abu Dhabi, was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer and referred to a hospital in Perumbakkam here. However, after he arrived on an Etihad Airways flight at 4 am in Chennai, he was detained while attempting to clear immigration by officials. He had been to the city twice earlier without incident, added sources.According to sources, immigration officials detained the ailing engineer after an alert from Delhi. Considering his nationality, rumours flew about him having alleged terrorist links. However, no officials came forward to explain why he had been detained. After close to nine hours, Hassan was allowed to enter the city after which he left for the hospital. Khadir was said to accompanied by a doctor, who was handling the referral.Sources in the hospital confirmed that a person from Abu Dhabi was admitted on Saturday, but declined to reveal more.
