New Delhi: The Jamia Milia Islamia University in the Capital was closed indefinitely following a student-administration scuffle over a readmission issue.

"Following the ongoing violence in the campus, the administration has closed down the university indefinitely," said university proctor R Ibrahim.

Five students were injured in the scuffle on Tuesday.

"Looking at the sensitivity of the situation, students have been asked to vacate their hostels by Friday evening," Ibrahim said.

Members of the students union had allegedly damaged some offices and vehicles parked in the campus after being denied a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor (VC) on Tuesday.

The students had apparently wanted to meet the VC over the denial of readmission to students whom the university officials had identified as "trouble makers".

"Some of these trouble makers were denied readmission following which they damaged some college properties. We will take appropriate action against them," Ibrahim added.

Negating the claim of the students that they were beaten up by professors and "their men", Ibrahim said, "Have you ever heard of students being beaten up by professors? These are false stories."

He termed the scuffle as infighting among students. However, five students were injured in the scuffle, including the students' union president, Shams Pervez.

Noor Alam, a relative of the students' union president said, "Pervez has sustained a nose fracture and is being treated at the Holy Family Hospital near the university. He and his friends were beaten up by professors and college officials."
