CHENNAI: Indicating that her government would not welcome the commissioning of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) without allaying the fears of the local people, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Saturday expressed her displeasure over the announcement made by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that the first unit of the plant would be operationalised within a couple of weeks. “The satisfaction of the people of the area is of paramount importance to my government and the State of Tamil Nadu,” Jayalalithaa said categorically in her letter to the PM and pointed out that the State government was facilitating the interaction between the members of the experts committee and the nominees of the local people in Koodankulam. “I was surprised to learn through the media that at a joint press conference with the Russian President you had announced that the Koodankulam Nuclear Plant will be operationalised in a couple of weeks,” the CM said and added that it was imperative that necessary measures to allay the fears of the people were undertaken before any precipitate action is embarked upon.Jayalalithaa recalled that following the resolution adopted by the Tamil Nadu Cabinet that further works on KKNPP should be halted until the fears of the local people were allayed and after the presentation of a memorandum to the Prime Minister by a delegation led by the Finance Minister of the State, the Centre had constituted an expert committee to interact with the nominees of the local people.
