Colombo: Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene recorded the fourth-highest individual score in the history of Test cricket when he was out for 374 in the first Test against South Africa on Saturday.

He was bowled by Andre Nel 26 runs short of Brian Lara's record 400 scored against England in 2004.

Only Lara, who also has a score of 375, and Australia's Matthew Hayden (380 v Zimbabwe in 2003) have made higher individual scores.

Earlier Jayawardene had shared in a new highest Test partnership for any wicket when he put on 624 for the third wicket with Kumar Sangakkara, beating the previous best of 576 set by compatriots Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama against India in 1997.

Jayawardene and Sangakkara, who scored 287, became only the second pair in the history of the game to score 250s in the same innings after Gary Sobers and Conrad Hunte for West Indies in 1957/58 against Pakistan at Kingston.

Replying to South Africa's first innings total of 169 Sri Lanka declared at 756 for five late in the day on Saturday.
