UT cops to approach court to seek custody of duo for interrogation

Two more persons involved in preparing the country-made bomb used in the attack on a police van that killed a notorious rowdy, Jegan, surrendered before George Town court in Chennai on last Friday.

According to police sources, the duo, Gnanavel and Bhim, gave in after learning that the police were searching for them in connection with the incident.

The Puducherry police are likely to approach the Chennai court to take custody of the persons on Wednesday.

The police have now begun externment proceedings against the hardcore criminals and anti-social elements as part of their efforts to curb the increasing crime rates in the Union Territory.

Nearly 60 rowdies and anti-socials were externed for a minimum period of two months in the last two weeks.

These anti-socials, involved in attempt to murder cases, extortion and house burglaries, would be banned from entering their respective police station limits.

A police official said these proceedings were a preventive measure under Section 144 of CrPC Act by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and is targeted against those who are considered posing  threat to public order.

The officials with every police station in the UT are expected to keep track of the externed history-sheeters. If they violate the order, the ban could be extended, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate added.

Meanwhile, police held a meeting with the traders, businessmen, loadmen and lorry drivers at the 100 feet road in Puducherry to allay their fears in view of the threatening calls to merchants and attack on a shop owner a few months ago.

Superintendent of Police, T Bairavasamy, who chaired the meeting, assured all protection to the business community in the area. A temporary police outpost would function from Wednesday to monitor law and order in the area.

According to the traders association leader, Abdul Rahim, a request has been made to install CCTV cameras in the area.

The Puducherry police assured all protection to business community and urged them to immediately inform about any trouble makers and not stay quite over it..
