Journalist assault: Police to seek remand of accused
Ashwini Malhotra was allegedly assaulted by some persons when he tried to stop molestation of a girl in Jalandhar.

Jalandhar: Punjab police will approach court to seek the remand of 10 persons arrested for their involvement in the alleged assault on a television journalist here, a senior officer said on Tuesday. "Ten persons have been arrested and a case of attempt to murder registered against them," Police Commissioner Gaurav Yadav said.

Efforts were being made to arrest the others involved in the incident, he said. Television journalist Ashwini Malhotra was allegedly assaulted by some persons, who were in an inebriated condition, when he tried to protest the molestation of a girl at a market area on Monday.

Yadav said none will be spared, when asked whether the arrested persons were close to a former MLA. The 10 arrested were produced in court, which sent them into judicial custody.

"We will approach court to seek their police remand for interrogation in the case," he said adding, "weapons and the vehicle used in the crime would be seized."

"Additional DCP Navjot Singh is probing the incident and he would soon submit his report," the police official said. The commissioner warned strict step against policemen who were posted near the market area on Monday, if they were found guilty of dereliction of duty.
