GUNTUR: With increasing competition from corporate colleges, government colleges in the district are having a hard time filling up their seats in the last few years. This has led lecturers of government colleges launching campaigns to attract students. A case in point being the Vemuru Junior College, which is trying to attract more students, after its student E Yaswanth secured 956 marks in the Intermediate exams last year.Speaking to Express, college principal K Srinivas said they are trying to impart information to parents about the good facilities and quality of education being provided, so that more students join the college.Meanwhile, Kolluru Junior College is harping on the fact that it secured a pass percentage of 93 per cent in the last Intermediate exams.Another fact likely to attract students is that around 10 students from government junior colleges in the district scored more than 90 per cent marks last year. The district has 21 junior colleges including a vocational college. However, many of them are not able to fill up their seats. Gurajala Junior College got only 20 admissions last year while Chandolu Junior College had only 24 students admitted to all courses. As the Board of Intermediate education allows 88 students in each Arts course and 30 in each science course, many colleges lack the minimum number of students required to run a class. This has college teachers worried that colleges might be shut down or they getting transferred to far-off places.Regional inspector of Intermediate education, V Koteshwara Rao said that the ensuing state-wide education week would be used to create awareness among parents about advantages of admitting students in government colleges.
