Kalyan quits as BJP in-charge of UP
Kalyan Singh has resigned as BJP in-charge of UP owning responsibility for the poor performance of his party.

New Delhi: Former UP chief minister and BJP's chief ministerial candidate in the just-concluded UP Assembly polls, Kalyan Singh, has resigned as the party's state in-charge, owning moral responsibility for the poor performance of his party in the elections.

Kalyan Singh is also the national vice-president of the party. In a letter to BJP President Rajnath Singh, the veteran leader said he owned moral responsibility for the party's defeat since he had been entrusted with the task of leading the election campaign.

Kalyan Singh himself didn't fight the elections. But his son, Rajveer Singh, lost the polls while his daughter in-law won on party ticket. BJP's tally plummeted from 88 seats in 2002 to a dismal 49 in the elections, which concluded last week. Its allies won two seats.

In his letter, Kalyan Singh also urged Rajnath Singh to revamp various party units and to build the entire cadre afresh. He hoped the party chief will take necessary measures to infuse new life into the party and would gear it up for the 2009 parliamentary elections.

He called upon the party workers not to lose heart and push themselves towards rebuilding the party "to meet the challenges that lay ahead".

Thanking the party leadership for having reposed faith in him, the former UP CM said the party did not fare well and the results were far below the party expectations.

He also asked the national president to spend at least three days for introspection into the poll reverses. Singh was also all praise for the party workers for the hard work they had put in during the seven-phase UP polls.
