Kanyakumari Engineers Develop Tool To Make Learning Easier For Visually Impaired Students
This Raspi audio aids tool can be used not only for education, but also for many other purposes.

Education is a necessity, which is needed by every other person in the world. Visually challenged students often find it difficult to stand on equal terms with their peers. To erase this gap, the students of a private engineering college from Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu have developed a tool with the help of Python code, which can help visually impaired students to read books. The developers Dhanusha, Shamapathuma, Wafa and Shafrina explain the working of this tool while interacting with Local18. They said that the first stage is to connect the mouse, keyboard, speakers, and webcam to the USB port of the mini-computer Raspberry Pi 4. After this, one needs to connect the computer to the HDMI port and then the Raspberry Pi 4 to the USB port. After the connection is made to the Mini-Computer, the Python code is executed on the computer and the webcam is used to capture the book in the classroom. From the photos in the book to everything written on the blackboard, the webcam will capture all and will come out as a sound on the speaker.

“This Raspi audio aids tool can be used not only for education, but also for many other purposes. In the classroom, the teacher treats the differently abled students as equals without making any distinction between them and other students. So that those students will not have any difficulty and this tool helps them to study automatically without any help,” they said.

After the teacher comes to the classroom, the students can use their Raspi audio aids and the visually impaired students capture the pictures and letters in their books, which will be converted into sound. The teachers use the video conferencing tool to clear the doubts of the students and clear the doubts.

The team has already applied for the patent of their invention. “We request the Government of India and higher authorities to consider and implement our findings. We seek the support and guidance of the central government to help our innovation in the education of differently-abled persons,” said Dhanusha and her team.
