Karnataka orders probe into kid-burying 'ritual'
Children buried neck deep in garbage dumps to "cure them of their ailments.

New Delhi: A day after disturbing images of children in a Karnataka village being buried neckdeep in soil during solar eclipse were flashed across television screen, the state government has stepped into action.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa has assured he will crack down on those putting the superstition into brutal practice.

“I am aware of the incident and condemn it. Inquiry will be conducted and will ensure that such incident not happen in the future. This has been done because of blind belief,” he said.

On Wednesday, more than 60 children – suffering various disabilities – in Gulbarga were forced to go through the “ritual” of getting buried neck deep to cure them of their ailments.

The parents stood by watching their children cry.

Some of the participants in the “ritual” - held in Gulbarga during every eclipse over the past 5 years - were from states like Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

Gulbarga DM Anbu kumar said the administration has started an inquiry into the incident. “We have started an inquiry into the incident. The culprit will be punished. We will try to find out if it was a business and whether it done for money,” he said.

The children were buried in various garbage corners in city's Mominpur, NayaMohalla, and Bilalabad areas.

Some parents were heard saying that their child’s health had improved a lot after making them go through the bizarre process.

The process started an hour before the eclipse and nearly 100 parents brought their children for this.

There were nearly 60 children were buried in Mominpur, and 20 each in Na y aMohalla, and Bilalabad.
