BANGALORE: To meet the acute shortage of skilled manpower for small and medium industries and utilise the Union and State Government funds effectively, the Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association (KASSIA) is planning to establish five skill development centres in the state shortly. There are many government schemes to provide training for unskilled workers and also entrepreneurs to enhance their skills. However, many small and medium industries associations have no clue of such schemes due to lack of awareness.“We have already written letters to various district associations asking them to send proposals for skill development centres. If everything goes as per plan, we will establish skill development centres in Bangalore, Mysore, Hubli, Belgaum and Mangalore in collaboration with the respective local associations affiliated with KASSIA,’’ Prakash N Raikar, president, KASSIA, told The New Indian Express. The Gulbarga Industrial Estate Manufacturers’ Association has started a skill development centre with an investment of Rs 60 lakh for the construction of a building and buy machines for training. ‘’We have forwarded the proposal of Gulbarga Industrial Estate Manufacturers’ Association to the government for funds. It is estimated to cost Rs 1.30 crore. The Union Government is expected to sanction Rs 65 lakh and State Government Rs 26 lakh for the purpose,’’ said Raikar. The skill development centre in Gulbarga is aimed at providing training for workforce of apparel industrial units.“Around 50 workers are being trained at this centre. The duration of the training is between 30 days to six months. We impart training not only workers sponsored by the government but also industrial units,’’ Suresh Nandyal, Secretary, Gulbarga Industrial Estate Manufacturers’ Association, said. The skill development centres in Bangalore, Belgaum, Hubli, Mangalore and Mysore will be established on public private partnership (PPP) model.‘’The proposed centres will generate a regular flow of varied skilled manpower and ensure continuity in skill output,’’ said Raikar.Meanwhile, Belgaum Small Scale Industries’ Association is all set to submit a detailed project report to set up skill development centre in Belgaum. There are 2,000 registered small scale industries and around 8,000 unregistered units in the district.“We have a huge shortage for skilled manpower in Belgaum district. The proposed skill development centre will train unskilled manpower in automobiles and engineering. There is a shortage of 5,000 skilled manpower in the district,’’ Basavaraj F Javali, president, Belgaum Small Scale Industries’ Association, said. There is a shortage of manpower for food-based and engineering industries in Mysore. There are 500 small scale industries in Mysore. “The number of unskilled as well as skilled manpower in Mysore district is very less. The youngsters prefer working at malls or hotels than small scale industrial units. We are also preparing a detailed project report on the proposed skill development centre,’’ President of the Mysore Industries Association P Vishwanath explained. There are more than 1,000 small scale industries in Hubli and Dharwad. These units urgently require around 5,000 skilled workers in the district.‘’There is a shortage for machinists and fitters to cater the needs of machine tool units. We are preparing a detailed project report for skill development centre. It will help the small scale industries to get the skilled manpower,’’ said Lakshmikanth Patil, president, North Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association.
