New Delhi: An FIR was registered against senior BJP leaders Vinay Katiyar and Sahib Singh Verma by the Jammu police for provoking people to take up arms against terrorists in the Valley.
Katiyar and Verma had announced a reward of Rs one lakh each for any civilian for killing a militant and Rs two lakh for a civilian's family if he laid down his life fighting militants.
Earlier, speaking at the ‘Save Hindu save Doda campaign' to protest against the killings of Hindus in Doda last month, Katiyar said, '' The BJP had taken this decision to give a befitting reply to militants and their designs.''
Senior leader Sahib Singh Verma too endorsed the party's decision to reward those who kill militants. '' The party will honour even those who happen to be workers of political parties including the National Conference, Congress and People Democratic Party,'' Verma added.
On Friday BJP played down Katiyar's statement announcing monetary rewards to civilians killing militants.
Congress also expressed fears that such remarks would fuel instability and violence in Jammu and Kashmir.
"Katiyar has already given a clarification. We only want the Village Defence Committees to be given sophisticated weapons and Katiyar was only referring to the Government scheme of rewards. We were only encouraging the people to do it," BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said.
On Wednesday, the party started a weeklong protest against what it called the Government's failure to provide adequate security to Hindus in remote mountainous areas.
