KOCHI: After suffering heartbreaks in the elections to the CPM district committees of both Kollam and Pathanamthitta, the Achuthanandan faction is expected to fight tooth and nail to wrest control of the Ernakulam district committee, even as the official faction led by Pinarayi Vijayan is also bracing to give the opposition a run for their money. According to CPM Ernakulam district acting secretary M V Govindan, the district meet would be held as per the schedule on Friday. “We are all set for the conference. All relevant issues would be discussed there,” he said. With factional feud in the district worsening in the recent times, the Pinarayi faction is learned to have resorted to a proclaimed agenda to undermine such activities. According to sources, though the official faction is keen on adhering to the official line of averting a contest, the leadership does not rule out the possibility of an election.Whereas the Achuthanandan faction, which claims an upper hand in the district committee, is expected to go all guns blazing after being at the receiving end in the two southern districts. The sources said that the party would be trying to reach a consensus at all levels if an election is imminent. However, the leaders of the Achuthanandan faction, who are ready to fight the election, see this as a ploy designed to sideline them. The conference to the Kochi area committee, in which the Achuthanandan faction enjoys majority support, was not held owing to severe factionalism. The political analysts in the state see this as a victory of the official camp, who could make some inroads into the district committee, of late. Moreover, Achuthanandan is being kept away from the district conference, which, according to some of the top party leaders, is also expected to brighten the prospects of the official faction. Notably, either Achuthanandan or Pinarayi had participated in the district meets in the recent past. But this time around, a team led by Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who will also inaugurate the delegate meet, would be participating in the conference and that too with planned agendas. The meet, which will run till January 8, would be addressed by state secretariat members Paloli Mohammedkutty, P K Gurudasan, Vaikom Viswom, M V Govindan and Anathalavattam Anandan. The conference is expected to scrutinise the factors that led to the party’s defeat in the Assembly and local body elections, last year. Apart from this, the ousting of the former district secretary Gopi Kottamurikkal, would also come up for discussion, the sources said.
