KOTTAYAM: Remya and Vineetha, the nurses who died while trying to save patients from the fire at the AMRI Hospital in Kolkata on Friday, were laid to rest with state honours on Monday.Remya was cremated on the premises of her house at Edakoli in Uzhavoor in the morning, while the funeral of Vineetha was held at the St Mary’s Church, Parayil, Kurumalloor, in the evening.A pall of gloom hung over Uzhavoor as the entire town mourned Remya. A large number of people thronged the house to pay homage to her. Remya’s relatives were seen wailing and consoling each other.Her mother Usha was lying in shock at one corner of the house while her brother Rajesh, employed at Kuwait, was receiving the visitors. Remya’s father Rajappan predeceased her. Parents of one of her colleagues Sandhya, who had suffered burns and was under treatment in Kolkata, also visited the place.A meeting to pay homage to Remya was held at Government High School, Edakoli, where she did her schooling. Finance Minister K M Mani was the first among the leaders to visit her house to convey his condolences. He offered Rs 10,000 to the kin. The Minister also promised to do whatever possible from the part of the government.Revenue Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Joseph Vazhakkan MLA, Government Chief Whip P C George, Kerala Congress (M) deputy chairman C F Thomas MLA and priests also paid their last respect. The panchayat also convened a meeting at the Uzhavoor Junction to pay homage to her.Similar were the scenes at Vineetha’s home at Kothanallur. Her ailing mother, father and sister were fighting hard to control their tears. They were consoled by leaders, including Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, P C Thomas, P C George, Vijayapuram Diocese Bishop Sebastian Thekethecheril, District Collector Mini Antony and SP C Rajagopal who visited the house. Jose K Mani MP promised to look into the issues regarding their house which was located close to the railway line.
