KOCHI: Despite opposition from certain officials from Tamil Nadu, the team from the Kerala Engineering Research Institute (KERI) carried out a one-day inspection at Mullaperiyar dam on Thursday. In the morning, Tamil Nadu officials stopped the KERI team at the boat-landing area, from entering the dam. They said prior permission was needed to carry out any kind of inspection as the security of the dam lies with Tamil Nadu.The team of officials from Tamil Nadu led by an executive engineer with the Works Department said that inspection could be carried out only with prior permission.However, officials from Kerala said Tamil Nadu has been informed about the visit by mail. Later, the KERI team carried out the inspection and collected the details.The details are being collected according to the instructions of the expert team from the state government which visited the dam recently. The KERI team collected various details, including the bed level of the dam. The studies are being carried out as part of preparing a proposal about dismantling the dam. “There are various proposals for dismantling the dam. One of which is to cut the spillway and let the water flow from there. For this, details about the bed level are being collected, based on which a final decision can be made about how much length should we cut open,” sources said.The team of officials from KERI included director Isha P Nair, deputy director Jessy, assistant director Shini and assistant engineer Ramesh.
