Infrastructure major IVRCL Limited, the Hyderabad-based company that is constructing the Kolkata flyover which collapsed on Thursday killing at least 23 people, was blacklisted by the Jharkhand government in 2015.
Though the company officials claimed that the Vivekananda flyover collapse in Kolkata was an 'act of god' - track record of the company revealed that it landed in to a rough weather during 2014-15 due to acute financial crisis.
In 2014, cash strapped IVRCL has put up Rs 4,000 crore worth of assets for sale and expected to come out of debt burden by 2016 once the sale is successful.
Also, in 2015 the company has cut its employee strength by almost 23 per cent as a cost cutting measure caused by economic slowdown coupled with delays in execution of projects.
Meanwhile, terming the mishap as 'unfortunate", top IVRCL officials said, "We will cooperate with the West Bengal government in probing the flyover collapse."
AGK Murthy, director operations, IVRCL, said, "We are shocked how it has happened and we cannot say what was the cause of the incident as of now there is no issue of quality".
The CMD of the company E Sudhir Reddy is yet to react two days after the mishap. Sources said, a team of policemen from Kolkata are likely to question senior IVRCL officials in Kolkata and in Hyderabad soon. "We have asked the CMD of the company to join the probe," a senior Kolkata police officer said.
At least 23 people have died so far and over 100 people have been injured after a portion of an under-construction flyover collapsed on a congested road intersection near Girish Park in Kolkata
Several people are still believed to trap under the debris. NDRF, Army along with disaster management, city police and fire brigade personnel are involved in the rescue operations.
