CHENNAI: Business at the Koyambedu wholesale market came to a grinding halt for about 24 hours as traders downed shutters urging India’s strong support to the US-backed resolution against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council. Traders in the market shut shops from 6 pm on Monday to 6 pm on Tuesday. Sources in the market pegged the loss to business at around Rs 30 crore.According to Koyambedu Periyar Wholesale Vegetable Market Merchants Association secretary S Chandran, “as many as 20,000 people took part in the strike. We also sat on a dawn-to-dusk hunger strike at Koyambedu on Tuesday, demanding that the Centre stick to its stand of voting as announced by the Prime Minister,” he added.On an average, the wholesale market receives 500 to 600 loads of vegetables and fruits from within the State and the rest of the country on a daily basis. It also receives several tonnes of flowers.According to Koyambedu Kamarajar Wholesale Flower Market Merchants Association secretary S Mookaiah, flower sales of around Rs 20 lakh was affected by the strike. “A total of 456 shop keepers at the flower market participated in the hunger strike. All the shops remained closed the entire day,” he added.
