PARADIP: Four days after being arrested from Puducherry, an accused in a cracker explosion that killed four people and injured as many in Kujang, was produced before a court near here on Sunday which remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days. The accused, identified as Subhash Rout, was brought to Kujang by a police team and produced before Judicial Magistrate (First Class), Alpana Swain who remanded him in judicial custody after rejecting his bail application, police said. A police team from the district had gone to Puducherry and arrested Rout on the night of January 4, who had been missing since the cracker explosion in November. While Rout is accused of having played a major role in the explosion, seven others have been named in the case for their alleged involvement in the incident. At least eight persons, all members of a musical party, were critically injured when crackers being carried in a mini truck burst near Kujang on November 16 during the Biju Workers’ Union rally. Four of them, identified as Dipuna Patra (12), Fakir Patra (32), Bijan Patra (38) and Kailash Jena (35), succumbed to the injuries while the rest were battling for life in the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. The crackers were being taken during a procession organised by the union from Sandhapur to Kujang. The participants were bursting crackers and dancing to music when the blast took place in the mini-truck, causing injuries to its occupants.
