Srinagar: A top Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist was killed in an encounter with security forces in Kupwara district, a defence spokesman said on Thursday.
Acting on specific information, security forces launched a search operation in Dousa village on Wednesday night and killed the self-styled district commander of LeT Abdullah.
Seventeen terrorists and eight Armymen were killed in the six-day Kupwara gunbattle that Army declared over on Wednesday.
Major Mohit Sharma and seven Indian soldiers of the Crack Special Forces were among those killed.
A huge cache of arms and ammunition, including 17 AK assault rifles, four UBGLs, 19 UBGL grenades and two hand grenades, was recovered from the possession of the slain terrorists, the spokesman said, adding the operation witnessed fierce gun fight between the troops and the terrorists.
Meanwhile, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah says the fight is on in the line of control, not in the Valley.
Abdullah said, “Infiltration has not increased. Terrorist attacks have decreased in the valley. Normalcy is on its way. I request the media not to hype the issue of infiltration. It is happening at LOC not in the valley. It has happened in the past and will happen in the future also. Our job is to stop it. We have stopped them this time. J&K is peaceful and I request people to visit there. About troop reduction, I never set a time frame for it. I only said if the current situation continues than we can reduce troops in a year or two."
Meanwhile, another case of infiltration has been reported from the Gurez region. The Army has shot dead one alleged terrorist and are combing the area. Reports say a group of 10 to 15 terrorists are holed up in the region.
