Visakhapatnam: In order to promote its container traffic, the Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has urged the residents of Kotaveedhi area in the Old Town here to shift to an area near Port Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
Kotaveedhi currently faces severe pollution problems. VPT expects to handle 18 lakh TEUs (Twentyfoot Equivalent Unit) by 2018. Currently, Visakhapatnam Container Terminal handles 2 lakh TEUs."In view of our future challenges, we have asked the Kotaveedhi residents to shift from there. We are offering them prime land worth about Rs 40,000 per square yard behind the Port Stadium in exchange. Land value at Kotaveedhi is estimated at Rs 8,000 per yard. Also, since we are planning to the widen roads leading to the Container Terminal in the future, locals will have to face heavy vehicular traffic. So shifting to the new area will be a good option," said chairman of VPT Ajeya Kallam. VPT was not taking up the land acquisition, which was the prerogative of the district collector, he added.
