HYDERABAD/VISAKHAPATNAM: The deep depression formed over southeast Bay of Bengal on December 25, turned into a tropical cyclone and was named Thane on Tuesday. It is expected to cross the coast between Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh on December 30.Nearly 60 boats anchored along the coast in Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Prakasam and Nellore districts and also fishing nets were damaged due to strong tidal waves of six to eight feet high. Four fishermen at Yeluru and 10 boats in Visakhapatnam were also reported missing.The state government raised the second level alert at all ports along the coast. Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy told officials in coastal districts to be on high preparedness to meet any eventuality and take precautions on a war footing to prevent loss of life and property. Fishermen are warned against venturing into the sea and tourists and general public visiting beaches are advised to be cautious.The Cyclone Warning Centre, Visakhapatnam, said the cyclonic system was traced to around 750 km eastsoutheast of Chennai and in the next 24 hours, it was likely to move in westnorthwestwards and intensify further into a severe storm. Heavy rainfall, accompanied by high velocity winds of over 200 kmph, would occur at a few places over Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the next 24 hours, while South Coastal Andhra Pradesh is expected to get heavy rains from tomorrow evening.
