The former chief minister M G Ramachandran’s (MGR) dream project of Madurai World Tamil Sangam, which he inaugurated in 1986, is all set to see fruition as the Government has issued orders appointing a special officer and releasing funds for constructing the master complex in the Temple City. The master complex is to come up in the 14.15 acres of land allotted for this purpose at Tallakulam, here, in 1982 by MGR.
Scholars expect that the Tamil Sangam would uphold the legacy of the three ancient Tamil Sangams, the guild of Tamil poets and scholars, which contributed to the classical language’s growth immensely, which were based in Madurai.
The Tamil Development Department, in its Order No. 234, dated July 12, 2012, has transferred the corpus fund of Rs 100 crore from the Ulagath Tamizh Semmozhi Tholkappiar Peravai to the accounts of ‘Ulagath Tamizh Sangam’, Madurai. Of this amount, Rs 75 crore has been converted into non-interest earning deposit and the Government will pay a grant of `23 lakh per year for administrative expenditure. The Government also ordered the release of the interest already accrued as per the need. As it would take some time to register the Sangam as per bye-laws, the GO provides for appointment of eight staff members, including a special officer, to do the spade work for the establishment of the sangam. M Rajendran, Deputy Director in the Tamil Development department, has been appointed the Special Officer. The office of the Ulaga Tamil Sangam is all set to function from the premises of Collectorate from Friday.
As a first step, the Government has allowed to draw funds from the Rs 25 crore in general accounts for building the master complex.
