KOZHIKODE: CPM general secretary Prakash Karat has said that India should take steps to maintain its cordial ties with Iran in the wake of United States imposing economic sanctions on that country. Karat was inaugurating the seminar series titled ‘War on Terrorism - US Agenda in the Arab World’ organised by the Keluvettan Study and Research Centre in connection to the birth centenary of C H Kanaran at the Tagore Centenary Hall on Saturday. He also said this is a crucial time for the Indian government to take a decision in this regard. The CPM general secretary further said that at present the Indian government has imported seven billion dollar-worth oil from Iran to which payments have not been made, under the pressure of the imperial US government. He also added that the pressure on India by the US government to stop all the economic transactions with Iran, is spoiling the long term Indo-Iranian relations.Karat also warned about the US government’s plans to make India a strategic partner in the imminent war on Iran.India has been importing a majority share of crude oil from Iran for the past many years.By succumbing to the US pressure India will have to start tapping the oil resources of Saudi Arabia also, which is a natural ally of the US, said Karat. The seminar had sessions on ‘Palestine, Zionism and Oil Politics’ led by Prof P K Pasha from the Centre for Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, ‘War on Terror- The state of Media’ by Venkitesh Ramakrishnan of Frontline magazine and ‘The creation of New Americanism’ by Doctor Bijulal of the School of International Relations and Politics, MG University.
