BANGALORE: The Standing Committee for Health along with other concerned BBMP officials are visiting the 'high-tech' slaughter house in New Delhi on Tuesday.Speaking to City Express, joint director, (Animal Husbandry), Parvez Ahmad Piran said that they have got good reviews on a slaughter house in New Delhi .“We will visit on Tuesday to study it and then adopt similar technology here in Bangalore,” he said.While the officials from the BBMP said that there are only three slaughter houses in Bangalore — at Johnson market, Russel market and Tannery road.But they are inadequate.Moreover, it's been almost nine years that the High Court ordered the BBMP (then BMP) to shift the existing slaughter houses outside Bangalore.“But due to various reasons, it has not been done,” official sources informed.The BBMP had earlier identified to start a slaughter in Igalur village Anekal.However, the idea was dropped after getting opposition from the localities.Now, the BBMP has got a piece of land of 40 acres from the KIADB in Harohalli.Talking about the hi-tech slaughter house, officials noted that it will have modern slaughtering facilities in hygienic conditions.The waste generated will be treated so that it will not be hazardous to the environment and ground water.When asked about the Chennai Abattoirs Private Limited, a private company which was short-listed for the construction of the slaughter house on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, officials said that they are checking the financial credentials of the company.“We have not yet selected anyone.This was the only company that had applied for maintaining the slaughter house two years ago,” official sources said.What the rule statesThe Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976 says that, “No person shall slaughter within the city except in a corporation or licensed slaughter-house any cattle, horse, sheep, goat or pig for sale or food or skin or cut up any carcass without or otherwise than in conformity with a licence from the Commissioner.”
