Many injured as police cane BJP activists

THRISSUR: The collection of toll at Palliakkara on Mannuthy-Angamaly stretch of NH-47 was disrupted following a lathicharge on BJP activists, who took out a procession to the toll plaza at 7 pm on Friday. At least 15 people, including Sobha Surendran, state president of BJP Mahila Morcha and a mediaperson, were injured when the police resorted to lathicharge.BJP district president Gopalakrishnan, Sudheesh Menoth and Baby Keedayi were also among those who were injured in the clash.While most agitators were injured in the lathicharge, the police personnel suffered injuries from stone-pelting. The injured have been admitted to the Jubilee Medical College Hospital, Thrissur, and Elite Hospital, Koorkenchery. After the lathicharge, the activists were back at the site to stage a sit-in in front of the plaza.They tried to lay siege to NH.A large number of police were deployed in the area and tension prevailed as the agitating public tried to gatecrash into the plaza. The situation turned volatile as more police force was deployed at the site.
