It is a herculean task, no doubt to present a range of topics, some mundane and some abstract, in a series of plays. But, a common thread that binds the eclectic mix of plays presented by Shot Glass Productions was that they were all on a lighter note. The message was along the lines of the common refrain ‘We are like that only, so let us laugh at ourselves’.
Take for instance the play on a tongue-in-cheek interpretation of Adam and Eve, as they debate to give in or not to temptation. Or the monologue on a man’s dilemma about his role in the life of a newborn —both felt like we were holding a mirror to our lives. Quite the mirror on the wall that tells us nothing but the truth.
Script Tease, a collection of diverse plays staged as part of the theatre fest Live in August.
A potpourri of topics and a stage set for first-timers roughly sums up the endeavour of Shot Glass Productions, staged at Alliance Francaise on Wednesday and Thursday this week.
Script Tease brought many amateurs — students, graduates and business consultants on stage, in short plays that ranged from romcom to drama and comedy.
The plays, directed by Vijay Saravanan, Lakshmi Priyaa C and Smrithi Amarendran, touched upon urban topics. Whether it was the concept of marital discord or the eccentric author on a perennial adrenalin rush to come up with a novel plot, the approach was sarcastic and light. But, that doesn’t mean there was no quintessential drama that is integral to plays.
In the back-to-back plays, none could see a tinge of amateurism. The highlights were the minimal cast, witty dialogues and nonchalant performances by the group that is part of Evam’s First Rush.
The audience connect earned bonus points for that delivered more than what was promised.
