We have realised that an outer shakiness is a reflection of our inner fickleness. As long as we are governed by our karma and the mind oscillates frequently between negative and positive states, we will continue to experience life as a series of ups and downs that shatter our inner peace and contentment. Remember, the state of our mind depends on our breathing. So when we stabilise our body, mind and intellect by regulating our breath to align them with our soul, we will be able to access the reservoir of peace which is the field of vibrating energy around the soul. As we understood in the initial part of our journey, our breath behaves like a rope and pulley and takes the senses, mind and intellect for an exhilarating dip in this deep, inexhaustible well of peace, tranquillity and serenity. When we attain a natural rhythm in our breathing and experience the spontaneous retention of breath, all our five sheaths of consciousness are flooded with peace. This peace that we experience stays with us throughout the day. Even if it diminishes, we can renew it instantaneously by practising the breathing techniques that we have learnt. So now we know that our peace does not depend on any person, circumstance or object outside us as it did earlier because it is always with us. We carry this reservoir of peace wherever we go and can take a dip in it whenever we want. As you begin to experience this more and more, you will realise how empowering it is. It will also increase your freewill.
The biggest fortune that we can have today is peace. Even when all our materialistic goals and ambitions have been fulfilled, all that we truly want is peace and contentment. We may have different lifestyles, aims, agendas, targets, income and status, but at the end of the day all of us have one common desire — the desire for peace. When we realise that this is the most important component of our life, we have to turn our attention towards our breath which is the royal highway to peace, prosperity and contentment. We should completely master the rhythm of our breathing and maintain a constant awareness of its state. If we notice any unevenness in it, we must set it right immediately by practising the right technique.
To correct a physical problem, we go to a doctor. The doctor we consult may be a very skilled physician, but he would have rarely suffered from the diseases he treats or underwent the treatment for the same. However, because of his knowledge and experience from having treated several people, he is able to cure us.
Enlightened sages who were physicians of the five sheaths of our consciousness, were a little different. They examined and understood the vagaries of the mind and intellect through personal experiences and practised breathing and spiritual techniques to overcome them. Having reaped wonderful benefits from them, the sages passed on their wisdom to the disciples who practised it and passed it forward.
These are ageless techniques. This is why, when we practise them diligently, they take us beyond the realms of time and space and connect us to the soul which is the fount of perennial peace and bliss.
