KOZHIKODE: Stating that the media are celebrating news on sexual harassments against women, Kannur Range DIG S Sreejith said the reports should be written in such a way that it supports the victims. He was speaking at a seminar on ‘The role of media in stopping crimes against women’ organised by the State Women’s Commission in association with the Calicut Press Club here on Monday.“Nowadays, important issues are often projected the least while trivial matters get prominence. Media should observe the way in which sexual assault cases are handled by the police officials. Instead of evoking fear among the victims, media reports can provide support to them,” Sreejith said.Inaugurating the event, Women’s Commission member T Devi stressed the need for formulating a women’s policy for the media. “Women’s Commission has been working in this regard for the past five years and its recommendations will be submitted shortly. Certain programmes telecast in visual media are illegal. Majority of the media are using women as a model to market their products,” Devi said.
