Karnataka: Mild tremors, measuring 2.05 on the Richter scale in the Kolar Gold Fields, caused panic among people on Thursday.
People were forced to run out of their houses and take shelter under trees and in open playgrounds.
National Institution of Rock Mechanics Director R N Gupta said that four tremors had been recorded in the last 18 hours.
The first tremor lasting 32 seconds was reported at 2350 hours (0520 hours GMT), measuring 2.05 on the richter scale.
This was followed by tremors at 0145 hours IST (0615 hours GMT), 0550 hours IST (1120 hours GMT) and 0630 hours IST (1200 hours GMT).
The impact of the tremors was felt even in far off places like Malur, Kolar and Bangarpet.
However, no loss of life or property has been reported so far.
Police rushed to the affected places and used public address systems to calm down the panic stricken people.
