The inaugural day of the mobile chappathi unit of the Central Prison, Poojappura, was a huge hit as around 30,000  chappathis and around 15000 packets of  curries, were sold out on a single day.

Though the prison authorities planned to set up mobile units at four places, there was change in the plan following excess demand for chappathis at the first unit which was set on the Medical College Hospital premises on Saturday due to the strike called on by Kerala Hotel and Restaurants Association.

As the entire chappathis were sold out at the single unit on Saturday, the mobile outlet could not extend its service to other places like Thampanoor, in front of Secretariat and at East Fort as was planned earlier.

The chappathis at the unit on the Medical College Hospital campus were sold out in two hours as there was heavy demand from the public.  Though the huge demand was attributed to the hotels and restaurants’ strike, the prison authorities are expecting good response in the coming days also. The mobile unit is an initiative of the Prisons Department to make  prison-made chappathis available at various parts of the city.  The chappathi-making unit of the prison  started functioning six months ago and around 35,000 chappathis are being sold  every day through the outlets in front of the Central prison and Women’s jail, Attakkulangara.
