HYDERABAD: A 60 year old woman slit the throat of her 30 year old widowed daughter's newborn male child and tried to dispose off the body in the Musi river but was caught by the police on Monday.
The male baby was born to the widowed Shaheen Begum out of an illicit relationship. Hence, Shaheen and her mother Salma Bee, decided to eliminate the infant thinking that the family's pride would be at stake if the locals come to know about the birth of the child. The family's poor financial condition has also added to the duo's decision to kill the infant, police said.According to Shahinayathgunj police, Shaheen had delivered a male child in her house at MM Pahadi on Monday.

"Shaheen's husband Saleem Pasha, died four years ago and since then, she has been living with her mother, Salma Bee. Shaheen has five children," Shahinayathgunj police subinspector K Srinivasulu said.

However, Shaheen father died of a heart attack a month after he came to know about the issue.

On Tuesday morning, Salma stuffed the body in a polythene bag and set out in an auto to the Musi river, to dump the body there. "A neighbour, who grew suspicious of Salma's behaviour followed her to Puranapul and alerted the police. By then, Salma had thrown the bag into the waters," Srinivasulu said.
