THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A nationwide industrial strike will be organised jointly by around 15 trade unions on February 28. The strike is in protest against the neglect of the working population in the country, said BMS general secretary Baijnath Rai here on Monday.In a statement, Rai said that labour had become an ‘unwanted agenda’ for governments in the states and Centre. Political parties too show a cool response to the demands of the working community, he said.The liberalisation policy has increased the number of unemployed in the country. The laws for minimum wages are violated in several sectors. Social security schemes are either minimised or denied.He said that there were attempts to link the PF pension with the share market. Efforts are also on to reduce the PF pension from 9.5 percent to 8.5 percent while interests for savings deposits in banks, post offices and other institutions have been increased.Employments on contract basis, disinvestment and outsourcing are pushing the organised workers into the unorganised sector. There are around 42 crore workers in the country who are denied job guarantee, service conditions and social security. The government and private sector employers are violating the labour laws quite often.DA in several sectors, including textiles, engineering and plantation has not been raised in accordance with the price rise of essential commodities, he said.Joint ConventionA joint convention of trade unions in the state to chalk out the strategy for ensuring the success of the nationwide industrial strike announced on February 28 will be held at the Town Hall, Ernakulam, on Tuesday. The convention will be attended by representatives of INTUC, BMS, AITUC, CITU, HMS, UTUC, AIUTUC, AICCTU, TUCC, LPF, STU and KTUC, the release said.
