KOCHI: Do not rely on the ATMs on the Ernakulam Town Railway Station premises. The ATM's of the Canara Bank and the State Bank of India situated on the railway station premises are a testimony to the lethargic attitude of the officials concerned who maintain them.It is the passengers who are at the receiving end due to frequent breakdown of the two ATMs—one situated at the entrance of the station and the other at the parking lot. "It's good to see that at least one ATM is working today. The ATM operated by the Canara Bank is not functioning for the last one month," said R Sudhakar, a passenger who commutes from Kochi to Kottayam daily."In case of an emergency, the passengers coming to the station have to search for ATMs in the nearby areas. It's really annoying. The authorities should take immediate steps to rectify the faulty ATMs," he said. When contacted, Canara Bank chief manager M K S Pai said, "We are sorry for the inconvenience caused due to the faulty ATM. We will take corrective measures to rectify the error. As I am new to this place, I am not aware of the problem."He said that the bank has opened a new ATM cell which was responsible for the maintenance of the ATMs and related records. "The cell operates under the Tripunithura Branch of the Canara Bank," he said.To a query, a Railway official said that it was not their responsibility to check the functioning of the ATMs."The Railways has leased out the place to the banks for setting up the ATMs. We are not responsible for its maintenance. It is up to the banks concerned to do the needful," the official said.
