TIRUCHY: Fourteen students of Nepalese origin, studying at National Institute of Technology (NIT) here have been questioned by CBI officials for allegedly submitting bogus nativity certificates for obtaining admissions under foreign resident quota.Without revealing the name of the students, NIT officials said CBI officials questioned the students on August 10 and they were waiting for a report. The charges against the students are that they were residing only in Delhi and Kolkata and had submitted bogus nativity certificates, claiming that they were living in a Nepal village. On taking action against the students, the NIT officials said they could not say anything without getting a CBI report. It is said that suspicions arose when the records submitted by the students were verified and cross checked with the Nepal government records.Last year, 98 students were admitted to the NIT and no doubts were raised about the other students.Besides verifying the  records of the 14 students, the CBI will also investigate the possible loopholes which facilitate fraudulent practices by the students, if the suspicions are found to be true.Since last year, admission of foreign students in NIT here is being coordinated by the National Institute of Technology, Suratkal.
