Some Chennaiites seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed the late night rainfall, especially since the city had not received such a heavy downpour in quite some time. College student Jhanavi S said, “This was lovely weather to put up my feet, drink hot tea and read the morning paper, while listening to the rain outside. I wish there were more days like this.”
Although it seemed like the weekend might turn out to be a damp squib, the rain eased off towards mid-morning, giving the city folk a go-ahead for their weekend plans. Stagnant water had seeped away by the time the traffic hit the roads.
Micro-blogging site Twitter too was replete with tweets and twitpics, capturing the various moods of the city in the aftermath of the downpour.
Though disappointed that the India-New Zealand T20 match in Visakhapatnam was called off, most cricket fans were praying that the rains would go away by Monday - when the two teams clash at the MAC stadium.
@ImHarini7 tweeted, “Poor Vizag ground, lucky Chennai ground. Going to visit Yuviraj’s comeback. Hope this time rain won’t spoil it.”
Chain of mishaps
A car was damaged as a concrete bus shelter collapsed near Vadapalani after a huge tree fell on it following heavy rains on Saturday morning.
According to a Corporation official, the bus shelter on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai at Thiru Nagar was constructed around 10 years ago. Though the taxi car was completely damaged after the bus shelter fell, nobody was injured, the official said.
