New Delhi: Directorate of Education on Monday issued new notifications for the admission of economically weaker students (EWS) in Delhi schools. According to new guidelines, the private schools will have to admit 20 per cent of economically weaker students in all fresh admissions made above entry level which was earlier 10 per cent.

The provision of 20 per cent quota will be applicable in minority schools which have been alloted land by the government. Schools will now have to give free books, writing material and uniform free of cost to all EWS students. The high court had ordered it earlier but it has been notified now.

The development comes after Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung had issued an order scrapping the 20 per cent management quota for admission to pre-primary classes in all private schools across the national capital.

The school associations, however, have been demanding more autonomy in selection process including freedom to admit students under the management quota.

Earlier, newly appointed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had also stressed that the state government will not allow private schools to charge hefty fees for admission in nursery class and it will streamline the process.
