Newborn with tail draws villagers

PARADIP: Jagatsinghpur hospital was in for a surprise when a baby girl was born here with a four-inch tail. The newborn is attracting attention with people thronging the hospital for a glimpse of what they call a ‘divine manifestation’.Babita Bhoi of Pakanpuir village under Jagatsinghpur police limits delivered the baby on Thursday evening.The father, Dillip Bhoi wanted the doctors to chop off the tail but the latter suggested the parents to wait as the newborn was too weak for any surgery.The newborn has a non-bony tail and all steps are being taken to ensure her safety, said peadiatrician Narahari Behera.Behera suspected the tail to be connected to a fatty tumour within the spinal column which may be revealed after an MRI test. We would seek expert opinion for proper investigation, he added.CDMO Rabindranath Das said it was a rare case but there was no risk to the life of the infant.
