THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The NonResident Keralites' Affairs Department is gearing up to establish a state level skill upgrading centre which would bring under a single roof its present skill upgrading training programmes offered through select institutions across the state.
"We have zeroed in on the idea after assessing the increasing demand for skill upgrading for prospective overseas employment seekers, which is currently offered mostly through private institutions across the state," K T Balabhaskar, CEO of NoRKARoots, the PSU under NoRKA Department, told Express. The new idea would also fortify the credentials of the NoRKARoots as a major recruiting agency for overseas jobs, and also help attract more job seekers towards the staterun agency. It would in turn help reduce the chances of people getting duped in the name of overseas jobs through fraud methods, believes the NoRKA Department.

NoRKARoots has been offering 12 skill upgrading courses through eight select institutions across the state for imparting training to the prospective emigrants, the objective of this programme being upgrading of the skill of the work force to meet the challenges in the overseas employment market. "With increasing demand, this was upgraded to 29 skill upgrading courses through 21 institutions in March this year, which also includes the stateowned Keltron," Balabhaskar said. The demand for unskilled work force has been declining in the overseas employment market.

Under the existing system, the programme can impart training to 2,100 job seekers in a year which is expected to increase manifold once the statelevel skill upgrading centre is set up.
