PUDUCHERRY: The Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) is all set to get its first new director since being made an autonomous body in July 2008.Dr Ravi Kumar, a surgical oncologist serving in the US, has been appointed to the post after he topped the selection list, followed by JIPMER Medical Superintendent Dr A K Das. In the event of Dr Kumar not accepting the job, the post would go to Dr Das.After the new director takes over, Dr K S V K Subba Rao, who has been holding the post till now, will be back in his parent department, Cardiac Surgery. He has about a year’s service left before superannuation. It would be a homecoming of sorts for Kumar, who did his medical studies in Thanjavur and Chennai and since has been working in the US for two decades, when he takes up the top job at the institute. He was selected from among 25 applicants to the post, including three from JIPMER—Das, S C Parija, the director professor, Department of Microbiology and Mahadevan, Professor of Pediatrics. The institute’s governing body altered the rules for appointment of director a few months ago, making NRIs eligible for the post, as a result of which Kumar applied for the post and got appointed. All that’s left is for the Centre’s Cabinet committee on appointment to give clearances for the shortlisted names for the Director’s post. This is a mandatory procedure as JIPMER, which is now an autonomous body, comes under the Union Ministry of Health.
