Mumbai: On the fourth death anniversary of poet Kaifi Azmi, his daughter Shabana Azmi and her husband Javed Akhtar paid their tributes by dedicating a play to him - Kaifi Aur Main.
The play is adapted from a book written by Shabana's mother Yaad Ki Rehguzar.
Shabana plays her mother in the play, though it can be an emotionally challenging part to portray, even for an actress of her calibre.
Javed Akhtar says that "Kaifi was simply a strange man".
The collage of a play incorporates Kaifi's songs and poetry interspersed with music by Kuldip Singh and though Javed doesn't have much acting experience, Shabana thinks he's perfect for Kaifi's role.
Its quite interesting that when I got to know Javed, in many ways I was discovering my father's roots through him. So, when Javed plays the part, it brings that resonance that makes it all the more special," says Shabana.
The play has been directed by well known theatre persona Ramesh Talwar; and is part of the Indian People's Theatre Association's (IPTA) on-going theatre festival, as Kaifi Azmi was actively involved with IPTA.
Shabana and Javed hope to travel to other cities after Mumbai to present their tribute to the great Urdu poet.
