New Delhi: Congress leadership has gone into a huddle to wriggle out of the embarrassing situation following President Kalam's return of the office of profit bill.
But gleeful BJP hits back at the party and targeted Sonia Gandhi by demanding her resignation.
But with the Left for once backing the government, the Congress is all set to fight back.
Earlier also Sonia Gandhi had resigned over the office of profit controversy and won with a whopping margin in Rae Bareili by-elections.
"This is a victory for democracy and principles," said Sonia Gandhi after the by-elections victory.
But this victory has been really short-lived as BJP, rejoiced by President’s refusal to sign the office of profit bill, again asked Sonia to resign.
Parliament had passed the office of profit bill and included the National Advisory Council chairperson's job along with 55 other posts in the list of exempted offices.
The opposition had boycotted the Lok Sabha when the bill was passed.
Now President has refused to sign the bill, and BJP is so thrilled that it in fact went to the Election Commission asking for Sonia's resignation.
Arun Jaitley said, "Even though she resigned, the EC must issue a notice".
The Congress was dismissive of the BJP's criticism but extremely careful when it came to rebutting the logic provided by President Kalam in his letter to the Parliament.
AICC Spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan said, "Undoubtedly both the government and parliament will examine the questions raised by the honourable President".
The Left is shielding 16 MPs who are involved in the office of profit controversy and it is as keen as the Congress to get the bill into effect as soon as possible.
