In Sanatan Dharma, each month is marked by various festivals and celebrations. The month of Sawan is particularly dedicated to Lord Shiva. In addition to its spiritual importance, several major fasts and festivals are observed during this period. For this year, the month of Sawan will commence on July 22 and conclude on August 19. The scriptures include specific dietary rules to be followed during the month of Sawan. Adhering to these guidelines is considered beneficial not only for health, but also for receiving the blessings of Lord Mahadev. During Sawan, it is customary to avoid consuming milk, green vegetables, yoghurt, and certain other foods. This practice is observed by various people.
There are both religious and scientific reasons for these dietary restrictions. Normally, green leafy vegetables are recommended for maintaining good health. During Sawan, these vegetables should be avoided due to the rapid multiplication of bacteria and viruses. The increased presence of bacteria, viruses and insects in the grass during this season affects the cattle that consume it, leading to the contamination of cow and buffalo milk.
Consuming raw milk during Sawan is not advised. Since yoghurt is derived from milk, it too should be avoided during this time. A simple diet is recommended throughout the month of Sawan. Onions, garlic, and certain vegetarian foods should not be consumed, as they are believed to generate heat in the body, which can distract the mind from focusing on worship. Hence, meals during this month should be kept very simple.
According to the Hindu calendar, numerous significant fasts and festivals will take place during this month. Some of the major observances include Sawan Somvar (dedicated Mondays of Sawan), Hariyali Teej, Nag Panchami, Pradosh Vrat, and Raksha Bandhan.
